8 don'ts when selecting open source CMS | Host2U.org Blog1. Don’t take for granted that your Open source CMS is 100 pc secure. All systems have flaws and errors or security holes.

If a CMS has a security issue hackers will find them eventually. 2. Don’t forget to keep you self updated on security holes in your CMS. Most Open sources systems release updates on a consistent basis ‘just like Windows or OSx. However not all systems check for updates automatically and some can’t install them by an easy click. Keep you self updated by subscribing to the Open source team mailing list or Twitter account. 3. Don’t forget who is responsible for updating your CMS. Perhaps you’ve used your hosting providers 1 click installer or maybe your website designer has installed the CMS for you. But do they update it for you. Rarely. Remember that it is your responsibility that your CMS is updated with the most recent security patches. However you might outsource the task to your web master, website developer or web designer. 4. If your CMS do provide you with update warnings, then don’t neglect them. Systems like Umbraco and DotNetNuke has a function that checks if there is updates available when you login. A system like WordPress also checks and by very few click in the admin you can actually update your CMS very simply (remember to backup before you update). Take the update warning seriously and update right away. 5. Do not forget to update 3rd party modules. Another developer than the Opensource team can develop modules on your CMS. These modules can also contain security flaws. Just as you must be updated on the CMS updates, you also must be updated on updates on any of the 3rd party modules your CMS use. 6. Do not forget to team up with an expert or specialist. Keeping your system current can be tricky and time consuming. If you team up with a specialist who is used to update your sort of Open source system, you can save time and focus on running your business. You can pay him monthly and he will make the updates when available, or your can pay by jobs. 7. Don’t forget to have a strong password policy. This is actually the largest reason which explains why hackers gain access to systems. Weak passwords. Try and make long password, at least 8 characters with both numbers and letters. Don’t use your name or zip-code and town. If you find it tough to recollect long passwords, try to make a sentence with a number, and then use the first letter of each word to create a password. E.g. ‘The Rabbit jumped over 4 Stones and 7 Flowers’ makes the password TRjo4Sa7F 8. Don’t forget to backup your full system ‘both files and database ‘ continually. You take for granted that your hosting provider backups everything. Well they do, but mistakes occur even at the biggest hosting providers. Also the hosting providers ‘ backup history is perhaps only 2 weeks. If your system gets hacked, the first thing a hacker does is leaving a backdoor. After weeks maybe months he returns and deface the internet site. When your hosting provider restore from the most recent backup the hack looks to be solved on the surface, but the backdoor is still there.

Setting your CMS sites on the cloud | Business Computing WorldIn short: web applications are complex, and managing them can be a full-time job. Traditional hosting options meant that the site owner had to figure out how to manage not only the application, but also the environment’servers, backups, databases and so forth. With Platform as a Service (PaaS), the platforms are specialised, so now site owners can leverage a whole stack that’s preconfigured and expertly managed to best support their applications.

But those proprietary solutions lacked some of the flexibility and ability that organisations needed to create truly custom-branded applications with Web 2.0 features. Site owners genuinely required business agility’a quality that proprietary solutions couldn’t provide, as every new feature needed to be hard-coded by a small team of developers. As a result, many disappeared, while the few remaining are facing fierce pressure to adapt to ever-changing requirements.

The full-time job of handling the web application can then be addressed by someone with full-time attention. Read more on Open Source Content Management Software

Delaware Content Management System Open Source CMS Software ...We prefer open source content management Systems like WordPress and Drupal. Why. Well, for starters, they have a familiar code base.

When we work with a client that has an existing website, it is always easier to work in a familiar environment with norestrictions. What does that mean. Some website development companies build large, proprietary, complex, content management Systems that ‘lock down’ their source code. This means that the client can not work on a vast majority of the website on their own or with the help of an outside vendor (us). It also means that the website can not be moved easily to another company if they should become unhappy.

This makes it easy to hire employees who are comfortable working with these platforms, in turn, the cost to our clients is a lot lower. Secondly, these open source Content Management Systems are easy to move from one hosting company to another. This is essential if you become unhappy with your vendor, if you can’t move your data, they are effectively holding your data hostage. Don’t let them tell you that you can ‘export your pages as HTML’, all this means is that your website will be broken, but you can keep the text. You will end up paying another website developer to build an entirely new website.

It is inexpensive, and can be installed and used with the help of supportive software on the server.

Web pages built on CMS are much more beneficial than those built with HTML language. The foremost aspect is that the former renders dynamic pages, while the latter renders static pages. The content on static web pages is unaltered for lengthy durations and every single page needs to be dealt individually for programming. Further, a HTML programmer must be highly proficient to make web pages that can compete with CMS-backed pages. But, CMS has an intelligible interface and also offers pre-designed templates, which can handle the layout and content of the whole website. WordPress, the semantic personal publishing platform, for example, is probably one of the easiest for the novice web designer. Many hosting providers will automatically install WordPress and set up the MySQL database for the backend ‘ all you have to do is assign an administrator, a few passwords, and you are all set. Adding Content is easy with the dashboard; type or copy text or code by hand, and you are done.

Several Content management systems (CMS) have amassed a large following in the past several years, including WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla. These three are at the top of the list, but there are plenty of others out there to choose from. Each of these systems utilizes a graphical user interface that bridges the gap between coding your own and getting Content into production. If you are creating customizations of themes and templating, this still requires coding, but many folks use these platforms straight out of the box.

WordPress also features an import and export utility that is helpful. And now that WordPress is into version 3.01 it has moved from the ‘best blogging platform’ and into a full-fledged Content management system. Examples of organizations that currently utilize WordPress for their web development platform are Reuters, Flickr, Harvard Law School, OpenID, and 2Advanced Studios.

Self Hosted WordPress Blog vs Free Blogging Sites | Personal ...Now that you know what a blog is, its time to understand the difference between a self hosted blog versus a blogging service. You might have noticed many online services that help you create your blogs easily, some of the well known services are live journal, blogger.com, wordpress.com, type pad, etc. All these sites allow you to create a blog without going through the hassles involved in installing blogs, plugins, modifying the blog, getting web hosting, domains etc.

On the other hand there are self hosted blogs, which are complete stand alone websites that does not depend on any sort of 3rd party services whatsoever. Yes, self hosted blogs do need a backbone and that backbone is the platform they use. A self hosted blog platform is nothing but a blogging CMS (Content Management System). Examples of these systems include wordpress.org (notice it’s not the same as wordpress.com), type pad, b2 evolution, movable type, joomla, durpal, nucleus etc. In a few words, these platforms let you control your blog in any way you want. And if you think having a blogger.com blog with a .com domain name, then please let me tell you that your blog is still not a self hosted blog.

Basically they provide you free blogs on their own site. But like everything else that is free, free blogs have their limitations. One of the biggest disadvantage of the using these services is that the blog you are running, is actually ‘NOT’ yours. I will explain this more in detail later.

Restaurant websites: A usability review - eatshowandtellThe biggest culprits are flash-based or image heavy designs. Whilst using Flash may be a win on the eyes, you are alienating a significant amount of phone users (iPhone). Whether you love or hate Stephen Jobs, iPhones count for 25% of the market share, just behind Android on 26% and that’s not even taking into account the number of people on the iPad.

It’s been nearly two weeks since our last post and we are not proud of it. Even though there are a few of us on this blog, it just happens that sometimes life gets in the way and we’re all busy with with work, travelling or working while travelling. The good news is, we’re all back and will hopefully continue to pump out more great Content for you to read. To kick things off, today’s post will be a little bit different, it’s still about food but more about restaurant websites and what makes a good one and a bad one.

While Flash does work on other mobile platforms such as Android and Windows Mobile, loading a Flash animation or movie which is not optimised for a mobile device will be time consuming to load especially on slow 3G networks.

It is an open secret; thousands of arcade site owners are smiling to the bank. One good thing about owning an arcade site is that it’s easy to setup and maintain. You don’t need to publish articles neither do you need to focus your attention on it on a daily basis.

Technology has made it possible for us to enjoy these games on our computer. Today we can install and play PC games any time of the day. There is a long and endless list of online games on the Internet. Arcade sites are special Web sites where you can play games online. You can make money just by owning an arcade site.

Bottom line, once you create an arcade site, insert the gaming codes, you are ready to go. Read more on Content Management System Examples

I received an email today via the ACTEM listserv (Association of Computer Technology Educators of Maine) in which someone was asking about software for creating an online resource for students and teachers. He wanted the students on their school iTeam (iTeams are generally teams of kids who help with troubleshooting and training in technology) to be able to post articles, how-to’s, and/or FAQ’s for staff and students at their school. First of all, what a great idea.

But, the matter at hand is’.what to use. This often depends on what you envision for the ‘resource’. Will it be an entire web site dedicated to technology issues. Will it be a bunch of articles or primarily text-based Q & A or how-to’s. Perhaps you’ll want lots of pictures, screenshots, or even video tutorials on your page. In any case, there is something out there that’s just right for your needs. Read more on Content Management System Examples

How To Start Your Own Online Magazine E-zineInstead, in 2004, I dipped a toe in the publishing waters by starting an online magazine, or e-zine, about a topic I was passionate about: New England travel. My total startup cost was just my frugal speed: $10 to buy a domain name and $12 a month for web hosting fees. This modest little e-zine began with a subscriber list of twenty of my friends who were interested in learning more about travel to northern New England.

Let’s stick with our bread baking e-zine example. If you type ‘bread baking’ into the keyword search, you will get a long list of words that relate to the topic. The term ‘bread baking’ itself results in about 74,000 searches globally per month. That’s a decent number, enough to warrant starting an e-zine on the topic. But if you scroll down to ‘Additional Keywords to Consider,’ you’ll find that the search volume for the keyword ‘bread’ is more than 9 million, and ‘bread recipes’ is more than 1 million. Ka-ching.

It has since mushroomed into almost three thousand loyal subscribers from around the world with over twenty thousand unique visitors reading articles on the site every month. Read more on Content Management System Examples

Should I Outsource My Startup Development To A Middleman Website ...There are some important decisions to make before you go to a user group. In the Washington area there are a ton of them. All user groups are not created equal, but there is a pretty good chance that if you follow some simple rules that you will end up in the right place.

The big thing that you need to know before you start going to these groups is the difference between a programmer and a CMS developer. CMS stands for Content Management System. Examples of CMS systems are WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla. If you are looking to build a custom application then you need to start off with a programmer in most cases, not a CMS developer. Just about any programmer you encounter can help you with a CMS, but they are going to be able to do a lot more. Often, people will try to make CMS systems do things that involve a lot of constraints and compromises that will add up over time. That said, there are some really valid uses for CMS systems for some startup ideas. An example of that is Groupon. Groupon started out as a WordPress site. It really depends on what you are trying to build. If you are not really well funded or in possession of a means for raising capital then you might want to consider starting off with something less ambitious initially. It worked for Groupon and it has worked for a lot of others. If you plan to build the next Facebook or Google there is no question here ‘ you need a programmer, not a CMS Developer. Having the right developer as a consultant early on, even for a few hours, can help you work through what might make sense and what would not.

The first major rule is that you should go to a user group that is for programmers, not for social media consultants and marketers. If you want to get your toe in the water without getting too far in I would recommend starting with Refresh DC. Refresh groups meet all over the country so a little google work can help you find one elsewhere if you are not local to the Washington area startup scene. Refresh is a great place to get the big picture, to meet some really good people, and to even get some insights from people there who are willing to share their insights over beers after the group’s monthly meetup. After you get your feet in the water you will want to check out a programmer user group meetup. If you are in the Washington area this is really a matter of choice and free time. Most programmer user groups meet monthly. There are groups that meet around downtown Washington, DC, out in Reston, VA, in Arlington, VA, in Columbia, MD, in Frederick, MD, and in Baltimore, MD. The biggest decision you will need to make is where to go first. The groups you probably want to check out first are the Ruby on Rails, Python / Django, and PHP user groups. Unless you have a specific reason to be using Java or C or C++ or some other language then these are a good place to start. I personally prefer Ruby on Rails, that is what I work with mostly, but Python and PHP are solid options too.

Cms Vs Blog

This website has been created with WordPress 3.1. plus a theme added to it. The reason that I chose that combination, was that I wanted a simple bookmark-oriented Home Page, with an easy-to-use administrative back door for me to update content.

We have a WordPress Link Serving platform. Easy to install plugin. http://clickcentive.com Totally free. backlinks wordpress plugin Why. We are in Beta. Also, it will be free for your network of Blogs forever. Also I am willing to pay you by the link, per month. The links are inside your posts or pages. NO SEO footprint, NOT even the plug-in. Interested.

I was also looking for a simple way to add plug-ins when needed. I had an idea, and just looked for the simplest way to implement it that I could find. That does not mean that there wasn’t a better way to achieve my goal (it’s just what I chose at the time). I’m happy with it, even though I have received negative comments about the visual design””.So be it.

Here’s some more noticeable differences between a CMS and a Blog (keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list and I’m not going to go into a great level of detail as that’s not the purpose of this article. Also keep in mind that this is a very generalized list ‘ I fully realize that not only are there differences between CMS platforms and Blogging platforms but there are also differences within and among various CMS platforms as well as in and among Blogging platforms. Again the purpose of this article is not to compare Drupal with phpNuke or WordPress with Typepad.):.

On the surface it may seem that there isn’t much difference between a CMS and a Blog. They both provide some sort of backend interface for administrators to manage the content of the website. They both invite social interactivity via the ability for visitors to leave comments, register as a user, or even become a contributor to the content. Then of course the primary focus of each is the delivery of some sort of content which in later years has involved not only pictures and text but also videos and audio (podcasts and the like). But surface appearances can be deceiving.

@Benjamin Kudria WordPress is a blogging engine. Defining a CMS as ‘Content, and you manage it’ is very vague. My phone has content that I manage.

@the previous Cms Vs Blog discussion, I think that the proper term you are trying to find is ‘Portal’ vs ‘Blog’, both are Web based CMS. And I think Nate is right, WP is blog targeted, but it’s also true that it works great as a ‘Portal’ manager, for ‘static pages’. Maybe it is not centered in lots of different data (like Nate mentioned, photo, video, job listings) but blog posts, and pages to some extend, but that is what most basic projects need, and integrating other kinds of content with plugins is really easy.

My computer has content that I manage. My camera has content that I manage. I am talking specifically about the context of the web. All pieces of content are not modeled around a ‘blog’ post, which is what WordPress does very well. Think about the different pieces of content. Photo galleries (categories, tags, comments, etc), Video galleries (categories, tags, comments, etc), and Job Listings (categories, tags, comments, etc) just to name a small few. A ‘blog’ post is just one piece of modeled content for the web. What about building custom modules with specific data modeling. No, this doesn’t mean to shoehorn it into a custom field inside of WordPress. What about custom modules that need to maintain associations to other specified modules (basic database relationships or bindings).

I just wanted to throw this in. WordPress is not just a Blogger, it is a content management system. The term Blog implies something about a site’s content, what it is, and how it is displayed.

Luckily enough, not only is WordPress open source, but it is also a non-profit .org site. Unlike Google and Facebook, WP isn’t trying to fill every bit of usable web space with advertisements. WordPress is simply trying to create a powerful web tool for developers. People may think that this will derail competition and progress, but WP has a thriving community developing plug-ins, widgets, and even user documentation. The developers also update the core software very regularly. This all proves that WordPress CMS is reliable, always up-to-date, well tested, and continuously evolving.

The idea of a Blog is something that is more static, barely modifiable, and usually centers around an author or group of authors discussing a specific topic(s) for a selected niche audience. While WordPress was originally a Blog platform, it is now much more than that. Content ‘posts’ no longer need to be in the basic Blog format. They can be styled in an infinite number of ways, and can be called or streamed through widgets or post feeds. A fundamental shift has occurred, the process of making a Blog post has evolved into making stream-lined content ‘posts’. After all, we cannot build or use a CMS without acknowledging the importance of separating form from content.

Open source software (OSS) is increasingly popular with businesses of all sizes throughout the nation because: the license cost is typically zero; the existence of a robust developer community constantly delivers add-on solutions; OSS solutions offer feature-rich functionality out-of-the-box. Businesses are learning that these OSS solutions can be used to build very professional websites with features rivaling the most popular websites online (because they too are built on OSS). Should your business consider transitioning to an OSS-driven website.

How to use WordPress as a Truly Customized CMS (Multiple Headers ...@Gesnok ‘ Apologies for the grey on black text ‘ that’s one of the ‘controversial’ issues about my site. Most don’t seem to mind, but every once in a while’ Anyway, I don’t currently have another version (though would like to work on a theme selection option, where users can select the default light on dark, or a modified dark on light theme’). What I can suggest is that you subscribe to the feed, because through your feed reader you’ll be able to read the post with your feed reader’s default design (which is likely black text on a white background).

@franky j ‘ I haven’t used cushycms (though have heard of it). WordPress is used so widely that I wanted to continue to utilize it. I already use it for this Blog, but decided that as I’m now focusing more on offering WordPress custom theme design and development to clients, that I would convert my static html web site to utilize the same platform, as well. Since this was for my own site, I was able to spend as much time as I wanted to learn some new techniques (putting it on my own dime, so to speak’) ‘ you don’t always have that luxury with client projects. I’d call it a self-learning educational project so to speak’.

And just pointing out that I’m not saying that to get more subscribers, LOL ‘ you can unsubscribe if you want, it’s just a way to be able to view the text differently. Also, until publish another post, you should just be able to read this post on the feedburner page without actually subscribing. Just a thought’.
